Welcome to the Semble FAQs. We'll be updating this section frequently so check back with us regularly for Semble updates.

Contactless is a payment method developed by Visa and MasterCard. To make a purchase using a contactless credit or debit card you simply hold the card up to the payment terminal. The card has an antenna inside it, which transmits your banking information securely to the terminal to complete the transaction. With contactless transactions, if the purchase amount is $80 or less, you won’t be required to enter your PIN. The idea behind contactless is to reduce the amount of time customers need to spend at the point of sale paying for goods and services.

All purchases made via Semble will be contactless transactions. So instead of using a plastic contactless card as you may do today, you’ll use your phone, which will have Semble and your Visa and/or MasterCard credit and debit cards on it. You’ll hold your phone up to the payment terminal and your banking information will be securely transmitted to the terminal using  the NFC antenna in your phone. As with all contactless purchases, transactions $80 or less will also not require a PIN to complete the transaction.

If the cost of the goods you are purchasing is $80 or more, you will have to enter the PIN specific to the card being used. In this scenario, you cannot sign for any purchases using contactless (and therefore all purchases via Semble). You will need to ensure that you have (and know) the PINs for all your bank cards in Semble.

The number of contactless terminals and customers using contactless cards has grown exponentially in the past 12 months. With a growing presence across New Zealand's major merchants/retailers, New Zealand is increasingly ready for Semble.

First you need to have a contactless-enabled payment terminal - please speak to your terminal provider about this. Next you'll need to speak to your bank to have contactless enabled. Then you're ready to accept contactless payments, and therefore payments via Semble.
