NFC, or Near Field Communication is short-range (less than 4cm) wireless technology that provides a method of communication between two electronic devices (for example between a mobile phone and a payment terminal or the Snapper reader).  NFC technology has been useed since 2004 in a number of different ways, such as building access and is already used in your plastic contactless bank cards.

In order for NFC features to be available on smartphones (such as for making payments or tagging on and off the bus), your phone must contain an NFC antenna. NFC is a technology that is built upon radio frequency identification (RFID), which allows one electronic device to send radio waves to another. At its most basic level, NFC is a standard for a very short-wave radio transmission.
